Maybe it's past it's best. When I was younger I had to climb that with a fire hose as part of a first aid course in fire safety. AND there is no prize for guessing the year LOL :wink1::wink1::wave1::wave1:

You weren't by some chance a cadet in St John Ambulance were you MG??? Sounds like the kind of thing you had to do in the fire safety proficiency-not one I actually did though!!:shy1:

Did you not stay in as an adult member?? I only left cos my Mum had a problem with someone in there. I'm not sure if the division has actually closed down now. I heard a rumour that all the Wigan divisions had merged!! Got to ask-how many proficiencies did you get?? I was credited with twelve but actually did 14. If I'd been credited with everything I'd done I would've been allowed an extra two years to get the full 16-though I can't remember the name of the badge we worked for!!!:shy1::shy1::shy1:

I loved doing the duties as well-free rugby!! We did one match and a guy collapsed in the stands. The only way to get him to the first aid room was by stretcher-going across the pitch!!Great fun trying to climb over that wall in a skirt!!!:evil1:
We used to cover the Haigh Hall thing at May bank holiday too,not to mention the Walking Days!!:shy1::shy1::shy1:
I was also part of a team of flag bearers that competed to carry the flag for the big service at Manchester Cathedral-we missed out because my shoes had a tartan trim on them! It was so close that was the only thing they could decide it on:sad1::sad1:

In those days there used to be Labour Club outings for kids and we used to go to Southport, Blackpool etc and when we got there our leader used to let us get changed and go on the fairs LOL :big_smile::wave1::wave1:

At Haigh Hall we used to be allowed half an hour when we could take our hats off-thus not in uniform-and go on the rides!! We also used to go to camp at Barnston (on the Wirral). Twice a year, one for a week and the other for a weekend. The weekend was a survival thing-running about in the woods making shelters which the older ones got to sleep in on the Saturday night!! That was a great experience!!!:shy1::shy1::shy1:

Our division went to one camp in Bexhill, and got the North West area banned!!! Our officer complained that it was badly run-mind you some of the older kids went on a "midnight hike". They were in groups, one group got completely lost and one girl fell down a ditch and broke her leg!!!:shock1::shock1::shy1:

Probably 'cos all the training's outsourced to India and the firemen are based at Leigh, Greater Manchester's next City! :angry1: :wink1:
